Comprehensive Approach to Unmet Mental Health Needs of Infants and Preschool Children in Foster Care, Phase II, “SYNCHRONY Project”



Project Description The SYNCHRONY Project consists of two primary intervention tracks; 1) Evidence-based parenting education and 2) Child /Parent psychiatric support (comprehensive and continuous). The child-parent mental health assessment, provided by a child psychiatrist or psychologist with special training or experience in infancy and early childhood, includes comprehensive and collaborative intervention planning and mental health care for: a) infants and preschool children in foster care; and b) when reunification is under consideration, their parents-of-origin. Families referred to the parenting education program may also proceed with the child/parent psychiatric evaluation whenever indicated.


Eligibility Criteria Children age birth to 5 years placed, at risk for placement, or transitioning out of foster care in St. Louis County, who have unmet needs for: a) mental health services; and/or b) evidence-based interventions to provide education and support to their parents-of-origin. Eligible referrals must be made through the Family Court of Saint Louis County or the Children’s Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services.
